    More than 500 workers at a Chevron Corp. refinery in the San Francisco Bay area have told the company they will go on strike at 12:01 a.m. Monday. A strike could push gas prices even higher in California, where the average gallon is over $5.84.

    If [white] people could really internalize the centrality of blackface minstrelsy to 20thC popular culture, we'd be capable of having an actually interesting discussion about what to do with that legacy in the present, but alas

    It's amazing when we recall that these people are responding to critiques that are at least 100+ years old, ever since the first person wrote against blackface. And their responses are shit.

    (It's also just not true that white writers don't write from the perspective of Black characters; this happens all the time. When they do it badly enough, it provokes a social media uproar, but "isn't allowed" also implies that it's rare to nonexistent in practice, and?)

    "allowed to" is the crucial misframing here, what makes this not even wrong. In the absence of any actual prohibition, she is calling for a repeal of a law that doesn't exist

    Russia is not the only country that elides its historical horrors. This very week the Daily podcast had an episode about Congo that made it sound like Mobutu was just a quirky homegrown leader who the US reached out to flirtatiously, looking for foreign investment

    Aged 6, I was taught that World War 2 was actually the “Great Patriotic War”, and it started in 1941, not 1939 - a useful omission of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. To this day, it’s widely accepted the war started in 1941. (4/?)
