Black thought and black politics are not homogeneous, absolutely not. But there's something painfully cynical about being the most well-known movement associated black person and calling for this kind of reform when huge swaths of the movement are pushing towards abolition.

Imagine offering any of these things as "data-driven suggestions" as though a number of them (banning chokeholds, warning before shooting, etc) aren't already ignored departmental policy.

        Zoé Retweeted Raven

Raven's thread is more comprehensive (and her writing work on prisons and policing is absolutely vital!). These solutions miss the fundamental reality that the mandate of the police means they cannot be reformed.https://twitter.com/aintacrow/status/1268399564249354244?s=20 …

        Raven @aintacrow
Please note the claim that it decreases police violence by 72% is only if the department has NONE of the policies and adopts all eight. D.C. has seven of these policies implemented already. NYC & Minneapolis already has four. Los Angeles and Oakland has five. Albuquerque has six. https://twitter.com/GQMagazine/status/1268225798084988929 …

I know it's an incredibly urgent time for black people to secure the bag, but...at what cost?

Deray is a good example of why "amplify black people" lends itself easily to a politic of white guilt + self-insulation. An amplification of politics that don't intrude on white comfortability, that don't demand sacrifice or redistribution. Politics that give us nothing.

Speaking of “black people are not a political monolith” it is very telling that a not insignificant proportion of black or otherwise abolitionist organizers (and journalists on the prison beat) I know/follow have come out immediately denouncing the 8 Can’t Wait proposalpic.twitter.com/TNOpgtGjYs
