To people that are weirded out by it - this saved me when I couldn't work. Yes, desperate people use it. You want to help poor people, don't take shit like this away, improve the things that push them into poverty in the first place like needing to overwork at minimum wage.

In the piece I don’t quote anyone calling for a ban on paid plasma. I quote people saying that policy makers should have a real discussion of the risks and, if warranted, raise wages for people who sell their plasma.

Calling them “donors” rather than “vendors” or “sellers” may be weird. So, too, is calling people who aren’t paid “voluntary” donors (implying that sellers do it “involuntarily”) or “altruistic” (as though people who are paid are therefore non-altruistic, like nurses).

in Italy is illegal to sell blood (you can free donate but not sell it). this practice prevents desperate people to loose even their own blood...their life, actually.
