Paint is not infrastructure. We need protected bike lanes on Burlington city streets

I cried when I interviewed Dan Langenkamp about the death of his wife, Sarah. She was a hero who saved countless lives in Ukraine only to be killed on her bike by a truck driver in MD. Her story deserves to be told, and these deaths must be prevented. usa.streetsblog.org/2022/09/01/wer

Pps If what CDBaby says is correct, this isn’t their fault. I hope someone can look into why iTunes Match payments must route through the original distributor. Is there a technical reason since it’s about matching songs in a users library? Beats me 7/

Ps iTunes Match payments are tiny or I would have made more of a fuss that it took 10years to resolve this! But still, think of how many artists start out on CDBaby. 9% of tiny payments across tens of thousands of artists probably adds up to something not so tiny 6/

My advice for recording artists who are starting out: go with a flat fee distributor over one that takes a percentage. This wasn’t an option back in ye olden days of 2004 and CDBaby was the only choice. I bear them no ill will…but I have paid them $25,000 in fees 5/

It’s easier than it used to be to switch distributors. When I first moved my catalog, reviews, playlists, rankings, all disappeared. There are still bumps, like 2 of me on Spotify, this iTunes Match issue and it can take a year for all royalties to flow via a new distributor 4/

At last I have an answer: CDbaby says this is permanent. No matter who distributes your music today, your original distributor will collect your iTunes Match payments - and in the case of CDBaby, take their % - FOREVER. 3/

For 10 years, I’ve received payments directly from Apple - with the exception of iTunes Match, which inexplicably continues to pass through CDBaby. Emails back and forth btw Apple and CDBaby over the last 3 years have been unresolved. Shrugs all round 2/

You are not permitted to walk with your offspring on their first day of 7th grade - because you would embarrass them in front of their friends, of course - but nothing is stopping you from hiding in the shrubbery to watch as they head out 😇

The irony that Instagram “verified” hundreds of fake musicians but meanwhile repeatedly denied the verification of real musicians, like me.

And who can even get a doctors appointment? My doc retired during the pandemic, the community health center is too busy to even see a nurse, so now I go to a doc in a box at a strip mall. It’s 2-4 month wait to see a specialist. Greatest country on earth, my arse

It’s astonishing to me how so many Vermonters I’ve met have never been to Canada, which is 45 miles north of Burlington. It’s like the earth comes to an end at the border and they aren’t even curious about it.

Any critique of debt forgiveness needs to start with an acknowledgment that the US economic system is *vastly* redistributive toward the already-wealthy. Any policy that works in the opposite direction is therefore a corrective — whatever else it may do well or poorly.

Very good news: The White House is ending what has been effectively a government handout to a few megapublishers at the expense of the public AND the scientists.

BREAKING: White House issues new policy that will require, by 2026, all federally-funded research results to be freely available to public without delay, ending longstanding ability of journals to paywall results for up to 1 year. Coverage coming on @ScienceInsider.

I had a generous scholarship, pell grant, all the campus jobs, worked every summer etc but my undergrad degree left me 30k in debt (61k in todays $$) and was very hard on my family. Fear of default kept me from pursuing music as a career until I was 30.

I’m so sorry. RIP ! Thank you for all your work to make Burlington’s streets more liveable! The city should build at least one protected bike lane in his honor

A horror-film-appropriate sonification of a supermassive black hole!

The misconception that there is no sound in space originates because most space is a ~vacuum, providing no way for sound waves to travel. A galaxy cluster has so much gas that we've picked up actual sound. Here it's amplified, and mixed with other data, to hear a black hole!
