the whole Audacity thing just highlights how shitty and entitled the entire "open source" user community is. They literally do not give two shits about maintainers. They will blow completely benign things out of proportions just because they're asked to OPT IN to giving back. lol

hot take: Every single open source project that cares about usability and stability SHOULD have *OPT OUT* (yes, you read that right) telemetry that they can use to improve the product and get a sense of who's using it and how.

don't complain about your open source project having shitty UX, having weird errors, etc, if you refuse to allow the developers to use pretty industry-standard tools for having visibility into what's going on. wtf do you think websites do? Even if you use ghostery&co.

They recently updated their terms and conditions to mention some forms of data gathering. It's mostly the stuff you might expect (crash reports, telemetry), but is a bit ambiguous in other respects. Some folks have latched onto this with a "Audacity is spyware!" reaction.

They act like they're superior to windows users because "I only use FOSS, no spyware lol" and then go do crap like this. They think foss means no telemetry and so "my privacy is protected", like they have anything to protect from "evil companies" other than their search history
