Me: What did Catskills comics think of you? Newhart: Catskills was tough. They would say at Grossingers, they had one door and four door shows. One door meant people walked out in one door. Four doors are the guys who died. They had people walking out through all four doors.

Being very on brand, I said Pinter debuted on Bway at same time BN became famous and they’re both known for pauses. Newhart immediately started talking about The Birthday Party. I had a similar ex asking William Friedkin about Pinter’s impact on him and The Exorcist. So...
