For an increasingly broad range of functions, here and around the world, Facebook isn't optional. For the most basic civic, personal, financial and social functions. There isn't a viable alternative, and that's why yet another privacy scandal doesn't budge numbers.

We also survived without electricity, antibiotics, wheels, writing... Once they’re here, though, they become part of the fabric of society and we don’t just shrug and tell people to survive as if before.https://twitter.com/tj__murphy/status/999722778759753728 …

For sure. Every time I hit a link off Twitter that’s for something on FB even if it’s just a picture, FB covers the screen in log in/sign up boxes. I’ve pretty much stopped with anything FB related. It’s just so oppressive. Twitter probably not much different but less obnoxious.

If it's not duplicated on the schools' website/linked from the school website to FB then that's the school's fault, not Facebook;'s.

You shouldn't have to agree to Facebook TOS in order to access information about political reports. In fact, that is a core problem. I've seen examples where schools put *emergency* information on Facebook and people have to agree to FB TOS to learn whether children are safe.
