Old and lonely people need someone to "talk to". That's a fundamental need that trumps privacy concerns. For everyone else though, the added convenience by Alexa is just too little.

Well said. And people actually pay for these devices. Quietly disconnecting and being present with your loved ones is been proven to increase happiness. The listening box just allows for better manipulation of and making money off the masses.

I kind of want an Alexa-Like device that is under perfect user control... She could do all kinds of fun things... If she was VERY trustworthy that is, and if I got to change her persona into a rabbit with a crown.

Convenience often trumps security. Early iphones were way less secure than blackberry. Electronic devices inside cars for toll collection. Use of cookies on web. "keep me signed in" functionality. Many, many examples.

Convenience is far more important than safety. Ask any motorist, and many cyclists and pedestrians.
