Coverage for ER is supposed to be the same for in or out of network. (so people should go to the ER if they need to without worrying about that) It's likely that the (unfair) distinction here is that surgery would be inpatient service after ER treatment.

In roughly 1998, my brother was injured in HS wrestling practice. I went to take him to ER. I asked him for his insurance card & called the number provided. The system was set-up not to say "yes" to anything.

The insurance company wouldn't say "yes" to a ER visit without authorization from a doctor they couldn't contact. Since they wouldn't say "yes" to a ER visit, they wouldn't provide guidance on which ER to go to.

If we let it happen, it will be like that in Australia all too soon.

Similar when I broke my ankle. Called to find an in-network ER, but ER doc, radiologist & X-rays were out of network. Bills for months.

Please enlighten us ppl from a different planet on earth (aka Europe) about "in-network". Such stories may bring some of us into ER prone conditions...

Don't worry, if you buy travel insurance in Europe, you probably won't have to worry about "in-network" or deductibles in US. We paid nothing for a recent 4-day US hospital visit for a family member, due to Norwegian travel insurance at USD200 a year for the family.
