Pirate era is over—will soon be more like this everywhere. Google "employees who are resigning in protest ... say that executives have become less transparent with their workforce about controversial business decisions and seem less interested in listening to workers.."https://twitter.com/sheeraf/status/996074983221690370 …

People in tech like to talk big, but are rarely willing to walk away from the $$$. This @kateconger report, that Google employees are resigning in protest of a Pentagon contract, is huge: https://gizmodo.com/google-employees-resign-in-protest-against-pentagon-con-1825729300 …

Tech companies are rapidly normalizing, becoming regular old giant businesses. Saying one thing publicly while lobbying or suing aggressively against privacy protections... Unless restraint and ethics are institutionalized, those big "meet the boss" events will mean even less.

10 years ago, Facebook, for example, was barely 4 years old, and had just opened to people. Hardly a tech giant then. I think things have changed in the past ten years. Google was big but not like this. Uber didn't even exist. So yes, I think things have changed.

Sure, Google is further along the development. But these companies did not act like, say, General Motors or Kodak or Walmart, for a long time. Not in the same place in the lifecycle. I really like Spar's Ruling the Waves on this. They aren't static; they evolve.

I'm referring to something very particular. They did not behave like regular giants. Working at one was not like working at General Motors or Walmart. It is increasingly converging, but it still isn't the same.

the signs and mindset were already there, you mean? then i agree. just didn't behave exactly like giants because they weren't giants. they seemed to be different before they got big enough to be just the same. is it possible to be giant and not act like one?
