No, then I lose all my old Signal messages. I have to try to get this phone fixed. Even if I get a new phone just to save the day, I cannot install Signal on the new phone without trying everything possible to salvage the old one. No back up option in Signal means this.

I can, but nothing on a laptop is really really secure. I'll just get off Signal, and use something less secure in the meantime.

This is the difficulty of security and real-world usability. Even Signal, which excels at the win-wins, can't currently find a way to make backups work well and not negate the whole security model at the same time.

But
@whispersystems can let people back up, even insecurely, on a contact-by-contact basis. I used to use Signal for everything. I could choose which ones to back up. Now, I'm off Signal and for a long time this has been why I cannot convert people to Signal. - Show replies

On the contrary, you can get IME-free laptops, and you can encrypt their stable storage with a strong passphrase, but you can't get an equivalently secure mobile device.

What's running on that laptop? As an Ubuntu user who regularly installs updates, I would not expect my laptop to be secure against well-resourced, targeted attack. Qubes might have a better shot, but most users would need training to use it effectively and securely.
