You're conflating party identification with ideology. Also, just spitballing, but maybeeee "global warming is a hoax" and "evolution is a lie" lost in a wide, free, and open marketplace of ideas based on empirical thought and science—and people nixed party affiliation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I know many academics who are not traditional liberals in many issues (academia is conservative in many areas!) but do not carry R-identification because, seriously, climate change is a hoax and evolution is a lie aren't conservative ideas, but routine among R candidates.
