Google Assistant making calls pretending to be human not only without disclosing that it's a bot, but adding "ummm" and "aaah" to deceive the human on the other end with the room cheering it... horrifying. Silicon Valley is ethically lost, rudderless and has not learned a thing.

That the many in Google did not erupt in utter panic and disgust at the first suggestion of this... is incredible to me. What of Google's famed discussion boards? What are you all discussing if not this?!?! This is horrible and so obviously wrong. SO OBVIOUSLY WRONG. *headdesk*

As digital technologies become better at doing human things, the focus has to be on how to protect humans, how to delineate humans and machines, and how to create reliable signals of each—see 2016. This is straight up, delilberate deception. Not okay. https://twitter.com/RulingWalnut/status/994235907648688128 …

So many called me a Luddite(!) or anti-tech (!) for saying Google fake-human bot is a terrible idea: if I'm your anti-tech person..🙄 I saved up pennies from my menial labor job as a tween—legally too young; I snuck in—to buy a computer to learn to code.😀 Anyway, writing longer.

And people with anxiety and other challenges that make it harder for them to talk on the phone: This will ruin what could otherwise be a helpful technology for you. Reckless deployment isn't your friend. To preserve a channel for accessibility support, you must be extra careful.

Anyway, back to typing out all the (obvious!!! it's 2018!!!) points on why this is such a bad idea at so many levels. Still flabbergasted that basic dynamics of deploying stuff like that at scale just isn't thought through... IT IS 2018.

"It's just a demo" people aren't getting the full scale of problems. Also Google putting a bot identifier at the beginning of call doesn't solve the many problems.https://twitter.com/getaclue_1/status/994918625906700289 …

Also: 1) ppl that say it was just a demo - ok 👌 if it is but they have a direction where they want to be (it will be easier for them to go through social and see what ppl want to actually use this for) 2) assuming that this will be used for just good is too good of you

I think people may under estimate how profound a change it will be when you can't tell whether it's a human or not. There will be congressional hearings when they do.

Once bots pass the Turing test? Yeah, hearings for sure.

I hear what you're saying and you're right. But I also haven't gotten a haircut in several months because I don't want to call. So the demo spoke to my soul a bit.

I thought exactly this. I find making phone calls very stressful, some days an insurmountable barrier. And ethically designed call bot - for e.g. making a restaurant reservation - could have been a great tool. Not this.
