Google Assistant making calls pretending to be human not only without disclosing that it's a bot, but adding "ummm" and "aaah" to deceive the human on the other end with the room cheering it... horrifying. Silicon Valley is ethically lost, rudderless and has not learned a thing.

So many called me a Luddite(!) or anti-tech (!) for saying Google fake-human bot is a terrible idea: if I'm your anti-tech person..
I saved up pennies from my menial labor job as a tween—legally too young; I snuck in—to buy a computer to learn to code.
Anyway, writing longer.Show this thread -
And people with anxiety and other challenges that make it harder for them to talk on the phone: This will ruin what could otherwise be a helpful technology for you. Reckless deployment isn't your friend. To preserve a channel for accessibility support, you must be extra careful.

Anyway, back to typing out all the (obvious!!! it's 2018!!!) points on why this is such a bad idea at so many levels. Still flabbergasted that basic dynamics of deploying stuff like that at scale just isn't thought through... IT IS 2018.

"It's just a demo" people aren't getting the full scale of problems. Also Google putting a bot identifier at the beginning of call doesn't solve the many problems.https://twitter.com/getaclue_1/status/994918625906700289 …

Then it depends how it's used in practice — who can use it, for which use cases, are people notified that they're talking to a robot, what is being logged, where does the training data come from, etc. I don't understand why this tech is inherently wrong.

I don’t think this is inherently wrong. That said, studies on robots (assuming perhaps this might apply here) show that people like robots that look happy, but look like robots. Presumably, this could apply to these types of features. /1

Yeah, best way to ruin a technology that could be helpful to people by launching it with straight-up deception and fakery.

if it is but they have a direction where they want to be (it will be easier for them to go through social and see what ppl want to actually use this for)
2) assuming that this will be used for just good is too good of you
