The other not-very-useful approach is "but you can't outlaw math!". Math has relatively little to do with the issues and the trade-offs and dilemmas we face (asterisk—there *are* issues but ... implementation + scale is the core question, not math.) (Reposted because of typo!!)

Not quite. There are problems with exceptional access at the math end, too. But it’s not a question of outlawing math but of ignoring it and its limits.

Also works the other way around: we’re avoiding discussing trade-offs and more fundamental questions regarding who should get access, when and to which data on phones, when we assume this is all not technically possible at all.

The other scale effect is worse. The host at
#cyberlaw pod points out that the FBI usually gets in anyway, so the real need is to enable Sheriffs Arpaio and Clarke to get in. Even “assuming a lock” the mind boggles at the subhuman element.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

How can society more conscientiously direct the develpment of tech to reap its benefits without inccuring a high social cost? Tech like this Israeli brain scan wouldn't be possible without risks. http://bit.ly/2DxpSeA pic.twitter.com/fccCcSxyTl
