At #ASCmediarisk, @mariaressa explaining how in the Philippines, "Facebook is the Internet"—and how social media, and Facebook, was weaponized against journalism and dissent. This Bloomberg piece says Facebook offered "white-glove services" to Duterte.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2017-12-07/how-rodrigo-duterte-turned-facebook-into-a-weapon-with-a-little-help-from-facebook …

I was researching French doors at work on google on my work computer, next day Lowe’s ads for French doors start showing up in my personal twitter feed on my private iPhone. They sell privacy back and forth and chop it up until no one understands it, like derivatives in 2008.

Well that worked out all right in 08 iirc

Getting off Facebook is necessary if we want to curtail it, but it can't happen without an alternative. And right now, there isn't one.

The rich aren’t the ones on Facebook and picking the Philippines is an interesting choice for saying you need control over Facebook. The Philippines is its own basket case with much bigger problems.

One morning everyone will wake up to something new. Our children will be saying, Facebook, we did that in history. Was that around when you were little daddy?

Is there a reason why Twitter is any better? Twitter has a newsfeed algorithm too right? Why do most people like you and some others I know of who do research in these systems prefer Twitter over Facebook? Is it because things are public anyway?

I'm pretty worried about Facebook, Google, and Twitter (they all have the same ad-targeted business model, they have all been too slow to respond to concerns about abuse & misinformation, they're all having some negative impacts on society). I wouldn't say that I prefer Twitter.
