Also: Pleeeeaase. Journalists should not act like stenographers to the latest apology tour; instead write about the context of all the apology tours in the past 15 years, and start interrogating Facebook's business model more (as some have been doing) in the interviews.

Look the point isn’t all this due to some evil conspiracy. I’m not claiming that Facebook employees don’t care about users. But incentives and business models shape their behavior—just like other companies and people.

On Android. Facebook has apparently been scooping up people’s text messages on Android phones. Not messenger communication—plain text messages. Content and metadata.https://twitter.com/foxenhimr/status/982385875630903297?s=21 …

The way to change Facebook and YouTube—and the whole online economy of surveillance—is to change their incentive structure and business model. Neither Zuckerberg apologizing for the umpteenth time in fifteen years nor legislators yelling at Zuckerberg will get us there.

ahaha this is supposed to be a put-down of me—the very week Facebook announcing an implementation of political ad transparency of the kind I called for five years ago. So yeah maybe that would be a good idea. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯https://twitter.com/AlecMuffett/status/982655550210048000 …

As far as I can tell, nobody who interviewed Zuckerberg asked him “What the heck do you mean: ‘Facebook community’? This makes no sense.”https://twitter.com/thorstenbenner/status/982939695440171008 …

This is not a mistake. Media should push back on these non-stop apologies and this and that band-aid announcements over many years and start asking about deeds—and legislators should demand accountability.https://twitter.com/ow/status/982227996265205764 …

I’d be surprised if every person who was on Facebook by 2015 didn’t have their data siphoned this way, and still floating out there in many databases. There may have been thousands, hundreds of thousands—maybe millions—of apps with this kind of access.https://twitter.com/christinawilkie/status/983062605496451072 …

Agree, agree and agree. I rarely talk about Cambridge Analytica or Russia--not that there isn't real issues there but neither is the core of the problem.

Also agree, but isn’t this all consistent with Facebook’s long time business model? Maybe consumers should start reading the manual? Further locating this all the Facebook brand dislocates the fact that this is the structure of nearly all online activity. Scope can widen imo.

If you have billions of users, there is a big responsibly to stop the manual from changing secretly, and to make it very user friendly. Especially when you want to *connect* the world. It's sad that people give FB a pass based on this BS
