Sheryl Sandberg also claimed that Facebook's problem is that they've been "way too idealistic." I don't know people who work for or run Facebook believe this, but if they do, it shows the power of self-deception—after 15 years of deeds, this doesn't hold. https://www.wired.com/story/why-zuckerberg-15-year-apology-tour-hasnt-fixed-facebook/ …

Also: Pleeeeaase. Journalists should not act like stenographers to the latest apology tour; instead write about the context of all the apology tours in the past 15 years, and start interrogating Facebook's business model more (as some have been doing) in the interviews.

Look the point isn’t all this due to some evil conspiracy. I’m not claiming that Facebook employees don’t care about users. But incentives and business models shape their behavior—just like other companies and people.

On Android. Facebook has apparently been scooping up people’s text messages on Android phones. Not messenger communication—plain text messages. Content and metadata.https://twitter.com/foxenhimr/status/982385875630903297?s=21 …

The way to change Facebook and YouTube—and the whole online economy of surveillance—is to change their incentive structure and business model. Neither Zuckerberg apologizing for the umpteenth time in fifteen years nor legislators yelling at Zuckerberg will get us there.

ahaha this is supposed to be a put-down of me—the very week Facebook announcing an implementation of political ad transparency of the kind I called for five years ago. So yeah maybe that would be a good idea. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯https://twitter.com/AlecMuffett/status/982655550210048000 …

We've already established in a prior exchange that you're the sort of person to call for censorship resistance one moment (Erdogan?) and yet call for censorship/filtering of Facebook the next. I lost a lot of respect for you, that day, @zeynep.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/859792162585804803 …

Indeed, I absolutely believe it is perfectly reasonable and, in fact, essential to block livestreaming of murder and/or distribution of snuff films. So, I guess we continue to disagree.

We do; I'm content with post-hoc reporting and mitigation by taking out the account + anyone linked to the offensive material upstream. But that's not good enough for you; it's more important that a human being play god, & then we have another battle: for a beneficent god.

Once a human is in the "censor" role, they will be a point of focus for every agenda and vendetta and conspiracy theory — consider what happened to Facebook's "trending topic" editors, while they were still employed. But, hey, thankfully you are not in charge.

It is perfectly reasonable to block streaming of murder, but once such a global infrastructure is in place, "bad people" can use force to gain access to it. How do we prevent it from becoming a Pandora's box of its own? We haven't solved that problem yet.

That is absolutely a solved problem. This is not a real dilemma. There are real dilemmas and trade-offs. This isn’t an example.

Fwiw, censoring, say, suicides doesn’t imply yielding to dictators (Alec likes his slippery slope argument) but it is far from trivial. Teams who handle this (Politics, Law enfrcmt, Security) have to spent political capital they might not have. It hurts credibility to dismiss it.

It’s not tinfoil contries either: France & Germany will demand to ban Nazi proactively (which won’t work), the current executive in Hungary, Poland, USA are not really above using police for political purposes. We should respect that those in charge try to balance a difficult set
