Nit-picking and fact-checking the way he bumbles into common, and not unpopular sentiments is fine, but that's missing why it rings true to any people. This happened again and again in the run-up to the election. DC-bubble doesn't hear the message that does get out and resonates.

The particular claim may well be factually inaccurate. Polarization ensures a backlash anyway because he's saying it. However, US infrastructure is crumbling while the companies that massively profit from its existence pay very little in taxes. That is just true. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

He was much better at this during the run-up to the election, and the DC-bubble just straight-up missed it. His particular version may be incoherent; there will be more competent versions of just this—from the right, and from the left. Overton window isn't just for nutty stuff.

That's not it. Benefits of immigration, trade and globalization aren't evenly distributed, and have significant drawbacks for segments of the workforce. Unbelievable to me that it took his (inaccurate and ethno-centrist) attacks to have that conversation.https://twitter.com/Thelonious08/status/981176776281018368 …

Ask Trump. I'm not defending any of the claims or statements. The way so many giant companies do not pay much in the way of taxes is a real issue. Does anyone really think it doesn't resonate widely? The point isn't his statements are accurate or not.https://twitter.com/ellyn_gesell/status/981177748612927488 …

I'm not arguing that his policies are consistent or statements are correct. There's a way in which he feels his way into popular *sentiments* that DC bubble is blind to. I think he's worse at it since he doesn't do rallies. That's what rallies did for him.https://twitter.com/MorganRaeBerk/status/981179461805662208 …

Of course they do! My point isn't that. This one won't hit because the beneficiary of both Amazon and USPS (rural communities) just want both to continue. The point is, there is a sentiment here that we will see more of, and it won't always be incoherent.https://twitter.com/BradCorContrera/status/981181836029132800 …

In any case, my point isn't about this moment. There is going to be competent and more coherent versions of these sentiments—that are somewhat orthogonal to beltway political divides—from across the political spectrum, and we'll likely see a lot of it in 2020, and even in 2018.

Correct! Fact-checking and arguing this one is fine—and not my point— and now that he doesn't have rallies, he's not as skilled. There will be others, soon, across the political spectrum. Both parties are throwing up "insurgent" candidates for a reason.https://twitter.com/AnatoleSerial/status/981188822338859008 …

Yep. So many people are missing this issue. Trump isn't just Trump. There's a global rumbling and realignment and that the US got Trump is a fluke. Too many takes about the moment (fine, fine, I write them, too
) but please allow a broader look as well. https://twitter.com/overlayered/status/981192468770250754 …This Tweet is unavailable.Show this thread
