Almost all established companies occasionally hold back from the worst, and that's also why we have oversight. This kind of moment when a few people see themselves as good, very good people, therefore equipped and ready to make these kinds of decisions for billions: so dangerous!

In any case, yet another one of those interviews where Zuckerberg says "yes, we ignored *that* for a decade, but now we will do better. I don't understand why people don't appreciate how good we are. This time we will do better. Sorry about ignoring all that for a decade."

At some point, you'd hope a bunch of smart people to think, wait, is there something more than how good we are to this thing where we repeatedly argue that, yes, sorry about ignoring that for a long time, but we are good people. Something structural? Something about incentives?

One could probably dig up many interviewswith very similar sentiment, just some other set of incidents. Sorry, you didn't want all that to be public? Sorry, privacy is important. Sorry clickbait is unhealthy. Sorry ethnic cleansing isn't acceptable speech. Who could've KNOWN?

Anyway, here's the full interview. History is full of massive harm done by people with great power who are utterly convinced that because they believe themselves to have good intentions, they cannot do harm or cause grave harm.https://www.vox.com/2018/4/2/17185052/mark-zuckerberg-facebook-interview-fake-news-bots-cambridge …

Facebook's repeated insistence that they mean well but just constantly blindsided--despite giant warning signs and a chorus of people trying to warn them--isn't an apology, it is an admission that they are not equipped to handle this kind of power.https://twitter.com/rmc031/status/980789717028540417 …
