Most people would probably want companies to comply with legal subpoenas on child abuse cases. Most probably would not want social media data to be used to hunt dissidents. Many other things in the middle ARE THE STUFF OF POLITICS. These are political fights. That's how it works.

There are trade-offs. If they don't retain any data, there is nothing to turn over in child-abuse cases or if dissidents are targeted. We had these discussions for previous technologies. These aren't questions for tech companies alone to decide that they will do as they please.

We must have the political conversation. This infrastructure is shaped politically and technically. There is a range of decisions that companies can make but who died and made them king on everything—globally to boot? We need more governance and a wider range of technology, both.

There is certainly an asymmetry (and asymmetric polarization) in the U.S. at the moment. What I want to comment on is more that motivated reasoning is always something to guard against, and that these questions are important political discussions to have!https://twitter.com/c_j_gebhardt/status/978630129063571456 …

Yep. Important discussion to have, indeed. What Thiel's Palantir is doing with big data analytics, and how it plugs into the law enforcement infrastructure. These topics have to be dragged out into the political arena.https://twitter.com/westwoodmom/status/978629119876444161 …

This is the reason I find it difficult to trust the intercept. For all the good stories they expose, there are multiple examples of f*cking it up, which make me question their intentions.

Sadly ICE has behaved so egregiously in the time of Trump that it was an easily believable story. So while it proved inaccurate, it is ICE's own behavior that didn't provide it with a reasonable expectation of doubt.

I think you're making a valid point but I can't help read it as "well it wasn't accurate but it said something true". I'm just wondering out loud about communication.

The Palentir stuff is still extremely disturbing, and separate from search warrant requests.

That story that went viral about how ICE used Facebook to track immigrants? It wasn't an immigrant. https://twitter.com/i/web/status/978625489920319491 … ^
