At some point, the instinct of self-preservation kicks in, you know.

LOL. That's can of along the lines of what I was thinking. I don't think anyone is worrying about FB investors, which would be uncanny levels of empathy.

I'm not on Facebook. I never felt like exposing everything about myself and the people I know to advertisers, thinkfluencers and complete strangers. I resent any society which makes it necessary to be on Facebook, and moreso people who failed to see the risks when they signed up.

I signed up about 10 years ago. I’m moderately tech savvy (for a non-techie) and a little paranoid. How was I supposed to predict the types of inferences that could be made about me by black box neural networks 10 years hence? Resent the billionaire perpetrators, not the victims.

Not so. Facebook depends on ubiquity. It can tell others reliable things only when everyone participates. It's like a credit reporting agency in that way.

Surveillance machines such as Facebook, Google, and, yes, Twitter need: *
#privacy by design w/ opt-in (not opt-out) * a pay-for-privacy revenue option * tight regulation and oversight * a critical user base willing to quit to exercise economic pressure#FacebookgateThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

This is precisely why I wrote this piece on how to build
#ethics into the design practice. Change happens when we all start thinking more carefully about our decisions:https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2018/03/using-ethics-in-web-design/#comments-using-ethics-in-web-design …Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Fair that it doesn't hurt Facebook much, but quitting Facebook and discussing why with your friends brings more attention to the issue and maybe eventually helps legislation.

One other plus out of all of this though is that we can be pretty sure Zuck's presidential ambitions aren't going anywhere any time soon.
