What I'd also like is a functional micro-payment system so I can read articles from outlets I don't wish to subscribe to as an alternative to disabling my adblocker to view content

Exactly.

I want to support a number of good, curated, traditional news and info outlets, without subscribing to 50 of them, at $200 annually, each.

how will this affect access to news in general, especially for those that don’t have means to pay? is this the future of news online? what happened to “internet open for everyone”?

I would pay a higher rate for "include my data only in overview summaries presented to The Advertiser"

We as in the internet using masses have a huge consent problem. As someone who used to work on genome databases, it is grim.

Right. Without that, Google is collecting data on the stories you read from those publications, adding to the privacy problem.

I have wanted a micropayment pay-per-page view for 15 years as an alternative to ads, let alone tracking. Legit news orgs should have done this years ago. But now, all the Googles / FBs / dotcoms put exorbitant value on click data, so a page view would be $5 these days.

Honest question: how could you operate a payments platform without storing the fact of the payments? The payments are linked with the subscription.

My point was actually about a way to pay Google not to track us. But your point? I haven't worked it out in detail, but I strongly suspect there are crypto tricks. https://www.cs.columbia.edu/~smb/papers/ppoad_cr_RLCPS10.pdf … shows how to do targeted ads without a linkable dossier, for example.

wouldn't that effectively shut out about 3/4 of the world population for which even a few cents would be prohibitively expensive?
