Is this supposed to be reassuring? I mean, I guess I *am* glad that some of the world's best paid people working at a company known for investing billions in moonshots unrelated to its own business occasionally catch *some* of the horrific stuff.https://twitter.com/toorsdenote/status/975430611664977920 …

I know people working in Silicon Valley feel defensive but... of course we want to hold these companies accountable for *all* the horrific stuff. Caught a few before going out to the world? Everyone at every industry does that, every day—with so much less privilege and resources.

Google is the second biggest company in the world by market capitalization. (Apple is 1st, Microsoft is 3rd, Amazon is 4th, Facebook is 8th). It invests billions in long-shot projects unrelated to its core business. We catch *some* horrific stuff is a wee bit weak as defense.

Sure. But hold the companies accountable, rather than yelling at employees for not doing enough.

Companies, like all institutions, are made up of people. Everyone from management down is responsible, in my view in direct proportion to their privilege, power and leverage. Defensiveness in the form of "we catch *some* horrific stuff" is befuddling.

Macej made a factually incorrect claim that the rank and file employees of Google aren't doing anything/enough. I fully agree that Google management should be held accountable. But I don't think it's fair to say that employees aren't doing anything.

I don't know what any one person individually is doing. But can you imagine this statement from any other industry—let alone one of the most powerful in the world. Teachers: "we occasionally do catch horrific errors in our lectures!" Doctors: "we do catch some medical errors!"

You wouldn't be satisfied with that from any other industry. I constantly encounter this defensiveness in this form "we are trying!" Sure. No doubt some people are trying hard internally. Still, the systemic situation is pretty clear—and a few people doesn't absolve the industry.

I'm not disagreeing with you but that's not what MJ's post is about.
