Is this supposed to be reassuring? I mean, I guess I *am* glad that some of the world's best paid people working at a company known for investing billions in moonshots unrelated to its own business occasionally catch *some* of the horrific stuff.https://twitter.com/toorsdenote/status/975430611664977920 …

You know those stories because the flawed algorithm went live and was discovered by the public. Now ask yourself, how many more times do you think Google *almost* released something equally horrific, but Googlers caught it and fixed it first?

I know people working in Silicon Valley feel defensive but... of course we want to hold these companies accountable for *all* the horrific stuff. Caught a few before going out to the world? Everyone at every industry does that, every day—with so much less privilege and resources.

Google is the second biggest company in the world by market capitalization. (Apple is 1st, Microsoft is 3rd, Amazon is 4th, Facebook is 8th). It invests billions in long-shot projects unrelated to its core business. We catch *some* horrific stuff is a wee bit weak as defense. 😬pic.twitter.com/MhBLC0tezn

Move fast and break stuff, should kind of have consequences when you break stuff for other people. It usually has pretty bad ones for the users, or companies relying on your 'stuff'.

collecting all the WiFi access points wasn't accidental; it was an engineer avoiding policy oversight. Process really matters

Hey, I think you missed the context of my tweets; I was arguing against an activist outside Google claiming that activists inside Google don't do anything to improve products. He is wrong about that. But I'm not claiming Google shouldn't be held accountable for fuckups!!!

Context collapse here - they are upset that internal activists (allies in accountability) are criticized by Maciej as if individually responsible.

I think what we're seeing here is a mismatch between how Googlers perceive themselves, and how they are perceived by others.

To public-spirited Googlers, the externalities are generated "elsewhere", and they are diligently working to reduce them.
