Nope! You can easily have access to research that provides public info without letting sleazy apps collect friend info. Put people on site! Independence of research, publish without PR approval, no taking data off site. Done. I know many who’d jump at this and contribute a lot.

Telephone business that also listens to what you say and can reorder your calls etc.—heck, I don’t think you have an appropriate metaphor. The claim isn’t Facebook decides what you like at some retail level—like fashion. It’s more a novel form of infrastructure.

The common thread is that users have autonomy over what they wear and what they share. If 70 y/o racists share articles about Hillary killing Seth Rich, and you conclude that the issue is Facebook's ability to ~control your mind~, then you're exonerating a large group of people.

The issue with Facebook is scale -- I don't doubt that -- but the unique network effects of the platform are wildly overstated when a large part of the issue in '16 was people sharing obviously false articles because they believe obviously false things.
