Should add my NYTimes piece to this thread. Opaque targeting based on massive surveillance is the problem, and Cambridge Analytica is the symptom du jour. Facebook cut off this pipe because it wants to do all this itself—for a fee! Well, they have _dramatically_ reduced what data can be accessed via their API since this occurred, and it's not clear that their business model requires allowing access to 3rd parties. The side effect is reduced: transparency, accountability & opps for academic research.
