The problem is structural—the intersection of the business model and the technology—and instead of treating it like the important, giant issue it is, most of Silicon Valley spends their excess $ billions on various "moonshots" unrelated to the harms of their core business.

This kind of pushing/auto-play at the scale of billions of people isn't a minor issue—especially given the popularity of YouTube for information among young people/children.https://twitter.com/devasta_ie/status/972880704651571200 …

VA is 4 Lo ❤️ers Biden my time @z9billReplying to @zeynepI see it all the time. I generally watch history lectures and documentaries. I'm constantly receiving suggestions for videos where the "history" content relates conspiracies some old like the Van Daniken rubbish but, many are new at least to me.4 replies 21 retweets 103 likesShow this thread -

YouTube's recommender algorithm operates at the scale of billions of people, and the stuff you see in English is the least worst part of it because it gets the most attention. Imagine what happens elsewhere.https://twitter.com/Khaled_Shami98/status/972915336239570946 …

This is a potent dynamic with global consequences. Recommenders algorithms and autoplay mint money for Google but also do this—>https://twitter.com/gabiporter/status/972942201528438785 …

So to people taking issue with the word radicalizing. What I am talking about here is radicalization through misinformation, lies and hoaxes—not radicalization in the sense of challenging power or outside of mainstream in a grounded, radical manner. That's not the dynamic.

Folks, please go read this whole thread below. All of it. And then remember that Chromebooks, which come with access to YouTube (and that I use because great sturdy secure machines!), are half the K-12 market in the US.https://twitter.com/limerick1914/status/972837152940855296 …

Liam Hogan @Limerick1914I just typed slavery into the youtube search and clicked on a video by an academic discussing the origins of plantation slavery in the New World. The next video queued up to autoplay was a discussion of "white slavery" by two Holocaust deniers (Ernst Zündel & Michael Hoffman II) https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/972595906821292032 …Show this thread9 replies 461 retweets 492 likesShow this thread -

I have a dear friend who used to be apolitical and really quite naïve. Their entire political education has been through YouTube videos. Their whole conception of mainstream politics is shifted so far to the right that Breitbart is considered a solid, centre-right publication

It’s not just the extreme content that is normalised, but the tone of debate. Discussion of ideas is secondary to mockery and insults.
