YouTube may well be operating as a giant radicalizing engine through its recommendation algorithm—leading people down a rabbit hole of misinformation, hoaxes and incendiary content. My latest for the New York Times on one of the most overlooked issues. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/10/opinion/sunday/youtube-politics-radical.html …pic.twitter.com/IslV5jshcL

Technically this doesn’t seem like a hard change to make to the algo and ml model, but rather your implying it’s a choice based on economics

It seems quite difficult to me. The current algorithm is, presumably, quite simple, but the clickbait vid producers are gaming it.

No they need a better algorithm to prevent it.

That would be good if YT wanted this, but whatever works. I’m just saying it isn’t simple to prevent. It’s not even simple to describe what we need YT to do.

Agree it’s not simple simple but I can imagine structural safeguards and ways of measuring this. First though need to be incentivized and invested.

I like the message coming from Twitter about better measurement. hopefully they see that only as a "means" to a better "ends".

Platform companies might consider "social media offsets/credits" like "carbon offsets" to inject into their marketplace. This isn't only about blocking and defending against bad actors and tech.

The reason these systems are gameable at all is that google has turned search into a negotiation, rather than a tool we learn to use. It has behavior like an animal, rather than utility. Covering it in nerf foam will only make the gaming we encounter more dangerous and subtle.

Google's endgame is a crappy patchwork AI controlling every bit of information we receive after decades of it eating its own tail. It will inevitably incentivize larger sites we can't control and a withering of smaller communities, because results from Facebook are "safe."

Seems like the faith in algorithms is part of the problem, too. End of the day they really need to put bodies on it.

I could say a lot about this, but I'll just say that human judgement is an algorithm of a kind, and I'm not sure if it reliably solves this problem. It certainly wouldn't be the youtube we know if you had to wait for a human to review your video before it posted.
