I have been hearing so many stories about YouTube suggesting extreme content (white supremacist propaganda, misinformation, hoaxes, etc.) to people watching regular stuff. Especially important since many young people use YouTube to seek information!https://twitter.com/_Almaqah/status/972592619082698752 …

The misinformation promoting tendencies of YouTube’s recommender algorithm is especially important since it is an important source of information for many young people and kids.https://twitter.com/ironedfish/status/972639952596021248?s=21 …

It is possible to fix, or at least significantly dampen, the extremism and misinformation pushed by recommender algorithms like YouTube's—but it would interfere with Google's business model which mints money while externalizing the "pollution" to society.https://twitter.com/ddssff/status/972816483293245440 …

The problem is structural—the intersection of the business model and the technology—and instead of treating it like the important, giant issue it is, most of Silicon Valley spends their excess $ billions on various "moonshots" unrelated to the harms of their core business.

This kind of pushing/auto-play at the scale of billions of people isn't a minor issue—especially given the popularity of YouTube for information among young people/children.https://twitter.com/devasta_ie/status/972880704651571200 …

YouTube's recommender algorithm operates at the scale of billions of people, and the stuff you see in English is the least worst part of it because it gets the most attention. Imagine what happens elsewhere.https://twitter.com/Khaled_Shami98/status/972915336239570946 …

This is a potent dynamic with global consequences. Recommenders algorithms and autoplay mint money for Google but also do this—>https://twitter.com/gabiporter/status/972942201528438785 …

So to people taking issue with the word radicalizing. What I am talking about here is radicalization through misinformation, lies and hoaxes—not radicalization in the sense of challenging power or outside of mainstream in a grounded, radical manner. That's not the dynamic.

Folks, please go read this whole thread below. All of it. And then remember that Chromebooks, which come with access to YouTube (and that I use because great sturdy secure machines!), are half the K-12 market in the US.https://twitter.com/limerick1914/status/972837152940855296 …

The number of people telling me that YouTube autoplay ends up with white supremacists videos from all sorts of starting points is pretty staggering. This needs large-scale and systematic research.https://twitter.com/kalicite/status/973266977060999168?s=21 …

This happens regularly. Remember, many young people turn to YouTube for news. And are fed this stuff. (This one may have been fixed as things that get called out like this get manually fixed. But this is structural and routine).https://twitter.com/blakersdozen/status/973301915743170560?s=21 …

Yep. Gaming is a popular topic among kids and I’ve seen YouTube recommend and autoplay horrible, racist and misogynist content following some random game tips video.https://twitter.com/marsarchaic/status/973278408971927552?s=21 …

No. Just no. I appreciate the complexity and challenge of this transition but, just no to appropriating one of the strongest public institutions we have like this. https://twitter.com/lucas_shaw/status/973686764224249857 …

To be clear, one of world’s richest companies, with billions of hoarded cash, has basically threatened to crush one of the few remaining wonders of the early web because they do not want to take responsibility while minting money.https://twitter.com/wikimedia/status/973995260056625153?s=21 …

I shouldn't be shocked, but not even giving a heads up that a giant, wildly-profitable internet corporation is about to potentially send hoards to destroy your site in order to externalize its own problems should at least deserve a heads up.

It's the incentive structure and the business model interacting with what's technologically possible (which is expanded by the incentive structure and the business model). The rest of the story that Silicon Valley tells itself about itself is mostly fluff.https://twitter.com/mattdpearce/status/973988224312926208 …
