What I can piece together: Clinton had an in-house algorithm/data decision team, while Parscale (no team, less money) went with what Facebook offered (fairly routinely) to big clients. Clinton team seems to have been particularly sub-par and Facebook does offer *a lot*.¯\_(ツ)_/¯https://twitter.com/WIRED/status/968512992873799682 …

I think Cambridge Analytica is exaggerating what it did (though competent versions will happen); that trolls/bots mattered some (especially since mass media kept falling for it); and that structural ease of mis/disinformation on platforms mattered A LOT. https://twitter.com/mikeyanderson/status/968590030288576512 …

IMO, the most consequential digital thing in 2016 may well be the Podesta hack and how that fed an enormous amount of misinformation online; how mass media fell for covering all the gossip in it instead of important stuff; and how unilateral political sabotage was mostly ignored.

I think this, too, is absolutely happening. I don't think Cambridge Analytica is what it has portrayed itself to be; and that is more worrisome. What happened was *regular* operation of the structures/platforms we have set up online, not some CA sorcery. https://twitter.com/LookAtMeImDanny/status/968593166889902081 …

I would wager that not much they can do works that much better than Facebook's "lookalike" audiences tool--one of the least reported aspects of 2016. https://twitter.com/mikeyanderson/status/968595218713870336 …

Trump had a much smaller, lagging organization assembled much later and haphazardly. It also seems clear that they turned over most of their work to Facebook's politics team and the platform itself which did a lot of heavy lifting for them. https://twitter.com/rmmageddon/status/968635817517375489 …
