What I can piece together: Clinton had an in-house algorithm/data decision team, while Parscale (no team, less money) went with what Facebook offered (fairly routinely) to big clients. Clinton team seems to have been particularly sub-par and Facebook does offer *a lot*.¯\_(ツ)_/¯https://twitter.com/WIRED/status/968512992873799682 …

The claim didn’t have reasonable or credible sourcing. (Why I held back on RT’ing/jumping in). Both campaign managers have vested interest and that other person, ahem, doesn’t appear that credible. That said, lack of Facebook transparency *is* big problem.https://twitter.com/kantrowitz/status/968584730550546432 …

Sort of unbelievable to be looking at this, but here's the Facebook CPM (price per thousand ad) breakdown for Clinton vs. Trump campaigns. Facebook just released it after mass outrage over claim that Trump campaign paid far lower rates. Claim seems murky at best now (via @boz) pic.twitter.com/cK42ZtZ0Fe

In mass media, outlets have to offer same rates to political campaigns but the story here is much bigger than ads because 2016 wasn’t about ads. Facebook structurally fostered non-public but well-targeted mis/disinformation to thrive on the site in 2016. That was the imbalance.

I think Cambridge Analytica is exaggerating what it did (though competent versions will happen); that trolls/bots mattered some (especially since mass media kept falling for it); and that structural ease of mis/disinformation on platforms mattered A LOT. https://twitter.com/mikeyanderson/status/968590030288576512 …

IMO, the most consequential digital thing in 2016 may well be the Podesta hack and how that fed an enormous amount of misinformation online; how mass media fell for covering all the gossip in it instead of important stuff; and how unilateral political sabotage was mostly ignored.

I think this, too, is absolutely happening. I don't think Cambridge Analytica is what it has portrayed itself to be; and that is more worrisome. What happened was *regular* operation of the structures/platforms we have set up online, not some CA sorcery. https://twitter.com/LookAtMeImDanny/status/968593166889902081 …

I would wager that not much they can do works that much better than Facebook's "lookalike" audiences tool--one of the least reported aspects of 2016. https://twitter.com/mikeyanderson/status/968595218713870336 …

Trump had a much smaller, lagging organization assembled much later and haphazardly. It also seems clear that they turned over most of their work to Facebook's politics team and the platform itself which did a lot of heavy lifting for them. https://twitter.com/rmmageddon/status/968635817517375489 …

Why do you assume Clinton's team was sub-par, versus working with the disadvantage of a less bombastic and more measured candidate who inevitably drove less engagement? My take:https://twitter.com/davidmanheim/status/967556355400888320 …

This is a great example of the difficulty in defining fairness in algorithms. Facebook optimized for profit without any political agenda - they get paid per click. The result is that they charged political campaigns differently in a way that created obvious political bias. https://twitter.com/nycsouthpaw/status/967464280592445440 …

Because, if it's indeed the case that HRC paid way higher CPMs than DJT did, that's at least partly (if not largely) fault of HRC's team. They shoulda looked at situation, said our ads aren't performing, changed them up. Tho it is easier to get clicks w/lies. So not all HRC fault
