Time for that sad reminder. After Robin Williams' suicide, sensational media coverage that violated the CDC guidelines resulted in a 10 PERCENT increase in suicides. Same effect applies to mass shootings. Newsrooms, please be considerate in your coverage.https://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/27/opinion/the-virginia-shooter-wanted-fame-lets-not-give-it-to-him.html …

In the mornings I'm supposed to have the TV set to news in our public spaces. If I see them wanking over something like a mass shooting I put the TV to the weather channel instead. And having a 3D model of the school is HLN wanking pretty hard over it.

I dont buy your theory. I think the phenomena is part of the American Spirit. As long as the US is chasing their ideals of capitalist freedom there will be side effects like this. Only a truly new societal system could change this. I guess the US will never change until it breaks

Colombian media, under weight of decades reporting on internecine, horrifying violence, grappled with this very issue 20 years ago. Lessons for US reporters and editors? My story fm then:https://www.csmonitor.com/1999/0927/p6s1.html …

Telling everyone how to avoid lockdown procedures. Sadly, since the idea this is part of the problem generally seems to be a right-wing, pro-NRA idea, don't expect it to change. The media will keep on doing what it does at least until it gets the gun ban it desperately wants.

I think we may even have gone backwards. The idea that media coverage feeds mass shooting used to be a respectable one not confined to the right wing. It doesn't seem to be this time around.

Can you cite the studies that suggest media coverage caused the increase in suicides? Did the studies say cause? Or was it correlated? And by how much? One last note, many newsrooms have policies in place related to coverage of suicides — that is what they would follow
