I'm often asked about what if I had a "magic wand." Interacting through social media is fine. I'm an immigrant; I need, want and will take the whole range: face-to-face to mediated. What I want is TO BE THE CUSTOMER. I want social media in MY interest, in public interest. https://twitter.com/peai002/status/965929689410883584 …

When I warned of online politics and asked for transparency and oversight in political ads/info online six years ago, people thought I was nuts. Now we're moving there. My piece from three years ago: only way out is for us to be customers, not products. https://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/04/opinion/zeynep-tufekci-mark-zuckerberg-let-me-pay-for-facebook.html …pic.twitter.com/AfjSUTy3Y7

Folks, you'd be surprised to hear of the intense backlash I got *just* six years ago for saying "Democracy should not just be about how to persuade people to vote for one candidate over another by any means necessary." We can improve all this. It's early. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/11/17/opinion/beware-the-big-data-campaign.html …pic.twitter.com/wHmjmDm0FE

In moments in history, you'd have thought transparency in political ads online was impossible, but it was not. You'd have thought we'd never get lead out of paint, put seat belts in cars, or ever have peace in Europe, or cut smoking down. But we have. Of course we can.pic.twitter.com/eZ3IRNPzZU

What we have is not a failure of possibilities but a failure of imagination, politics and oversight. Silicon Valley is stuck in a rut: dull and unimaginative. Yes, the technical work I read is quite interesting but what's being produced is confined to a narrow, dull range.

People ask me if I feel like Cassandra! If I had to pick a Greek tragedy for myself, I'd go for Pandora! I always fall for that hope thing.
(Though I just went to New Zealand and learned to shoot bow and arrow but don't think I'm getting the Artemis assignment anytime soon

I don't know what Facebook and Twitter should do exactly (it's a collective, political process) but thanks to the amazing folk at
@webstock NZ (AN AWESOME CONFERENCE!) and their incredible (and fun!) hospitality I know what I need. More archery in my life. ktxbye for now
