Frustrating that an otherwise decent article concluded that people will be denied insight, as if there aren't other smart writers out there with better critical distance on this central issue.

Agree 100%, though also I think a tech writer who gets the tech angle is important too. (I know they tried to hire
@zeynep; they should back up the Brooks-level money truck in her driveway and try again.)1 reply 0 retweets 19 likes -

Her Wired piece on the Golden Age of Speech was worth more than everything the Times op-ed page has published on tech in the past ten years, put together. https://www.wired.com/story/free-speech-issue-tech-turmoil-new-censorship/ …

Aaaw, thank you. Nick commissioned it and gave me freedom;
@johngravois is an *amazing* editor and... it's a print piece with print rates so more length than an op-ed *and* more time. I don't understand how people think time one can spend on pieces is totally unrelated to pay.

Like I said, the Times should dump the money truck on you so you can have all the time you need :) But understandable if the size/space constraints of the traditional op-ed page don't make sense for the kind of writing you want to do right now.

I work with great people there! The reach of that page is pretty amazing. Cannot complain; really lucky. NYT remains a spectacular place to write. It is still freelancing though, which is different than how their columnists get paid or write. I have the day is 24 hours problem.

Wired has become so interesting! I'm subscribing.
I'm partially talking about all of this publicly as one of luckier people in this space, I can point all this structural stuff publicly without being deeply penalized—and hopefully other people will be supported, too and better.

Yes, I think despite all the criticism (my own included), it's terrific that the NYT has made the choice to give someone this platform - should be really powerful for the right person. Any idea who you'd shortlist for it? (i.e., who should I run out and follow? :)
