"rush" Many of us have been begging for this for years but.. never mind us. I know folks who advocated for this since the 70s! Even earlier. Also, cannot do ethics add-on, extra course. Ethics isn't an extra patch; it has to be built up from root—integral to design.https://twitter.com/amarashar/status/963199544904298496 …

Also, I've been teaching a version of computers/society/data/AI and ethics for ... as long as I've been teaching! I even wrangled to teach such a course when I was an adjunct! I often have CS students show up in my course just because that's where they could have the discussion.

You have to integrate ethics into the computer science curriculum from the first moment you teach students here's a variable, here's an array, and look, we can sort things. When you run your first qsort, you've encountered ethical and ontological questions. Let's talk about them.

what ethical and ontological questions arise from running qsort?

It is a slight but not a complete exaggeration to describe the project of modernity fundamentally as the project of making the world legible (and sortable) to power—including state and corporate power. (I <3 the book "Seeing Like a State" for a good conceptual framework on this).

qsort sorts discrete data.. We often take continuous or continuous-ish stuff from the messy world & make it discrete. Stuff it into arrays. So many ontological questions just right there! How do we discretize? Who decides? How? And then sorting. One way among many to prioritize.

You could start by asking simple Q.. How do we discretize a variable like race? Or gender? So much just right there. Talk about why sort is so central to CS, so much attention early on--developed as mechanisms of control/calculation of enterprises/states growing at scale.

Goes to heart of relationship between modernity/capitalism & computers. James Beniger's Control Revolution is an underappreciated book, for example. Honestly, just the way we use variables ... is worth pondering. Opens to big, good questions.

This is all good, but it's Information Theory, not strictly CS. I see what you mean and where you're going. It cleared up my engineer-focus on the issue at hand.

It is not strictly CS but given CS is building the altering the architecture of our information ecology and even our social fabric, I think it could be integrated. And engineer folk do discuss this stuff. A lot of CS pioneers did. Plus, there is new CS to develop!

The question of surveillance is leading to innovation/exploration of homomorphic encryption. Asking the questions the field is tangled in also opens up technical questions/areas to explore.
