"rush" Many of us have been begging for this for years but.. never mind us. I know folks who advocated for this since the 70s! Even earlier. Also, cannot do ethics add-on, extra course. Ethics isn't an extra patch; it has to be built up from root—integral to design.https://twitter.com/amarashar/status/963199544904298496 …

How you get a field with a good deal of otherwise mediocre Wernher von Brauns. (Interestingly, a lot of early computer science pioneers had a lot of depth and discussed/pondered all this a lot.) https://twitter.com/joelgrus/status/963241384063873029 …

Awesome! And agreed. I would love to co-teach a course like this.
-
(I say "co-teach" because I'm rusty on the nuts and bolts. I was one class short of a computer science major in college and just never bothered to petition to have a logic or math class count FTR. But still, it's been a while.)

Yes! Pretty much everybody needs an ethics course. I still have my copy of Baer's "The Digital Villain" from 1972; good programs are already doing this. Needs to be universal.

+1 for liberal arts education. Ethics was a requirement for my mathematics degree.

The first taste of CS ethics was Jim Greenley saying something like "you don't launch people into space with Java because if the VM crashes, everyone dies. When lives are on the line, you write in C, and you check for null." Thankfully, Dhooge at @GeorgiaTechMBA had me covered.

Also I read
@gtcomputing is making ethics mandatory. This is great news. Jim Greenely's admonishments to write life-critical code in C probably wasn't enough. - Show replies

So you're saying by the time students get through, say, Stanford's Persuasive Technology Lab, it's too late?
