"rush" Many of us have been begging for this for years but.. never mind us. I know folks who advocated for this since the 70s! Even earlier. Also, cannot do ethics add-on, extra course. Ethics isn't an extra patch; it has to be built up from root—integral to design.https://twitter.com/amarashar/status/963199544904298496 …

Also, I've been teaching a version of computers/society/data/AI and ethics for ... as long as I've been teaching! I even wrangled to teach such a course when I was an adjunct! I often have CS students show up in my course just because that's where they could have the discussion.

You have to integrate ethics into the computer science curriculum from the first moment you teach students here's a variable, here's an array, and look, we can sort things. When you run your first qsort, you've encountered ethical and ontological questions. Let's talk about them.

How you get a field with a good deal of otherwise mediocre Wernher von Brauns. (Interestingly, a lot of early computer science pioneers had a lot of depth and discussed/pondered all this a lot.) https://twitter.com/joelgrus/status/963241384063873029 …

I was at a data privacy seminar recently when the recently retired head of a computer science school dismissed the idea of teaching ethics and privacy on the grounds that "there isn't even room in the syllabus for the important stuff".

reminds me of the oxymoron business ethics course they have finance majors take while training them to ruthlessly extract value from the work of others

And it's not always done usefully. Took a CS ethics course ~17 years ago and learned very little that seemed useful.

Mostly the prof mused inexpertly about philosophy. My medical ethics courses were much better

Are there other disciplines that have done a good job of systematically embedding ethics into the core curriculum? Something to use as a model?

Engineering ethics is required for accredited Engineering programs in Canada. So software engineers see it. But not students in Computer Science (Unfortunately).
