So this Wired story pretty much confirmed for me what I’d been saying for a while (including before the election). Facebook got played and manipulated to not fix the egregious exploitation of its platform before the election. Plain and simple. https://www.wired.com/story/inside-facebook-mark-zuckerberg-2-years-of-hell/ …https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/914200471384010752 …

I wrote a bunch of it longer form; have been tweeting for a while. Hold on.https://twitter.com/tqbf/status/963164426953248771 …

The article at Wired fills in a few more of the pieces of the story I very briefly wrote about here last year. I believe there is maybe one or two more shoes to drop, but all pointing at this direction. Facebook was deliberately manipulated—and it caved. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/29/opinion/mark-zuckerberg-facebook.html …pic.twitter.com/O4v2loedXs

Let me emphasize something that I have both tweeted and written here and there. *Mass media* also got played, and was targeted pretty deliberately, especially by Wikileaks etc. This isn't just a Facebook vulnerability. Here's an earlier thread on that.https://twitter.com/zeynep/status/831497557062848517 …

We lean on Facebook and YouTube and Twitter (as I think we should) and there is a lot of good traditional media reporting on their manipulation/vulnerabilities but the mass media story remains largely untold, unearthed despite it's crucial role in this space.

And none of this is an argument about whether Hillary Clinton was the best candidate, what else was going on, etc. I continue to think the real story isn't what RU may or may not have done, but the vulnerabilities of our information ecology and our broken politics.

It's pretty easy to manipulate people who think they're "above" politics.

isn't this basically the old Keynes quote about people who think that they are independent?

It'd be funny given SV's hard-line stance of being outside politics...if it didn't have such dire ramifications...

Real names policy timed for election season, personality quizzes, experiments in whether they can alter moods, free reign for Aleksandr Kogan... nah, Facebook's more accomplice or conspirator than victim. Starts at the amoral top.
