Facebook's algorithm change is so noticeable that I'm now hearing from many non-technical, frustrated people who know I study this stuff and asking me how to break out of it. They don't have the terminology for it, but people are effectively asking me how to game the algorithm.

It's all so complex that I don't know what it will all mean, but the key point is that this is all greatly consequential, and unilaterally imposed. No simple way to muck around with social and informational interaction structures of two billion people. The crisis is structural.

This is not a sustainable answer. Facebook is the only way for a large number of essential connections for a large number of people--functions ranging from family, work to political participation.https://twitter.com/_bhylton/status/961947700852940801 …

The world also worked before cell phones or any phones. It even worked before writing. Try functioning without one now. It's not the same once something becomes crucial infrastructure for important functions. (Besides, Instagram is Facebook ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )https://twitter.com/seriously211/status/961950534126264321 …

There is also this—hearing this from institutions and pages—sudden and dramatic change for them. https://twitter.com/samharrelson/status/962014259449180162 …

The level of cruelty and thoughtlessness contained in this one tweet had me muttering “don’t tweet in anger; don’t tweet in anger” and putting the phone down. Doesn’t happen too often.https://twitter.com/ef21345/status/962031687583412225 …

U r one of best writers on tech out there so I'm taken aback at your scathing dismissal of people who suggest rejecting FB as a personal choice (like me). Clearly FB is 2 powerful & needs competition or regs. This very debate speaks volumes about FB's outsized influence in world.

It’s fine to reject it when one can. But need to recognize many cannot. It feels like we’re telling people to get personal masks in response to air pollution.

Right. We need personal *and* systemic choices and solutions. Thanks for your continued thoughtful work in this space!

Thanks. My point was that he idea that people who I can only connect via Facebook products are, by definition, non-essential ties can only come from ignorance of how the world actually works, or cruelty. I have been very deep in thia space for a long time!

I know! I used your book in an "art as social action" presentation for a class last semester.
