Facebook's algorithm change is so noticeable that I'm now hearing from many non-technical, frustrated people who know I study this stuff and asking me how to break out of it. They don't have the terminology for it, but people are effectively asking me how to game the algorithm.

Same argument holds for electrical appliances, motor vehicles, the wheel

Honestly, these "just get off FB" comments seem equivalent to addressing an epidemic of teen pregnancies by saying "just keep your legs closed." That response ignores structural social pressures, & implies that we can ward off collective problems by blaming individuals.

I *am* off FB, and I pay for it, socially (and probably professionally as well.) I doubt I could sustain it if I were't married to someone who still uses FB actively and who keeps me in the loop.

Then again, Zuck won't lift a finger until people start leaving FB en masse. He can't hear users complaining over the sound of ad $$$ rolling in. So the question is: How can we build something better and how can we make the transition for users as painless as possible?

I hate Facebook. I think Facebook is an evil force. I resisted getting a FBaccount until a few months ago. Why did I give in? There was a specific community I wanted to be a part of, and the FB group was the only way.

Let me guess - was it moms against guns group? I'm convinced the Facebook interface stops people from taking action. We should start a public campaign to allow people to join groups without joining Facebook. This troubles me so much.
