Facebook's algorithm change is so noticeable that I'm now hearing from many non-technical, frustrated people who know I study this stuff and asking me how to break out of it. They don't have the terminology for it, but people are effectively asking me how to game the algorithm.

Yes, I will use USPS to send written letters to people I communicate with some of whom are functionally illiterate, live in countries other than US, are mobile-only and I can't even manage to get them to use SMS (due to cost or technical issues). All good.https://twitter.com/Charlie_Corley/status/962009368697819137 …

Why hadn’t I thought about the existence of other methods? ::slaps forehead:: I guess I just don’t know that much about communication technology. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://twitter.com/brooksie4/status/962048517417111552 …

You can tweet in anger, it's ok. You're still wrong on this.
-
I do my best not to; I recommend you try it for tweeting in ignorance. The idea that the ties that I'd sever if I stopped using Facebook products are, by definition, non-essential is ignorant and cruel. My kindest interpretation is that your ignorance comes from your privilege.

Wow. That's just...so WRONG. People use FB in lots of different ways, including for support.

If people followed "think before you tweet" more often, you wouldn't need to put your phone down.

U r one of best writers on tech out there so I'm taken aback at your scathing dismissal of people who suggest rejecting FB as a personal choice (like me). Clearly FB is 2 powerful & needs competition or regs. This very debate speaks volumes about FB's outsized influence in world.

It’s fine to reject it when one can. But need to recognize many cannot. It feels like we’re telling people to get personal masks in response to air pollution.
