Facebook's algorithm change is so noticeable that I'm now hearing from many non-technical, frustrated people who know I study this stuff and asking me how to break out of it. They don't have the terminology for it, but people are effectively asking me how to game the algorithm.

The world also worked before cell phones or any phones. It even worked before writing. Try functioning without one now. It's not the same once something becomes crucial infrastructure for important functions. (Besides, Instagram is Facebook ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )https://twitter.com/seriously211/status/961950534126264321 …

There is also this—hearing this from institutions and pages—sudden and dramatic change for them. https://twitter.com/samharrelson/status/962014259449180162 …

The level of cruelty and thoughtlessness contained in this one tweet had me muttering “don’t tweet in anger; don’t tweet in anger” and putting the phone down. Doesn’t happen too often.https://twitter.com/ef21345/status/962031687583412225 …

Yes, I will use USPS to send written letters to people I communicate with some of whom are functionally illiterate, live in countries other than US, are mobile-only and I can't even manage to get them to use SMS (due to cost or technical issues). All good.https://twitter.com/Charlie_Corley/status/962009368697819137 …

An alternative that isn't run by a dude with a societally dangerous moral deficit would be welcome.

then it's going to take some work to make sure you get the alerts on content you care about. flagging the accounts you want alerts from, presuming FB still allows that. and then they'll change the game again.
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

"The world was fine before Facebook" doesn't address the issue. If I'm trying to keep up with classmates, cousins, and other friends scattered around the country, but fb is showing me cute dogs, that's a structural problem. Does gaming the search bar help?

The human species accomplished a lot before Facebook -- heck, we even got to the point where we can make things like Facebook. Do we need to be in constant contact with so many people? Newsletters & reunions for distant friends, calls, letters visits for close friends worked.
