Everyone, go read this piece by @henryfarrell and @rickperlstein on how fake video technologies interact with media business models—and the tornado about to hit our politics (yes, much more than now). This is important. It's here. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/04/opinion/hacking-politics-future.html …pic.twitter.com/Xb6QWc8i2D

This is an inflection point. We need new method of authentication that do not yet exist. If you met me in the last few years, you know I've been begging technologists in the anti-censorship space to work on this—not just circumvention. Verification is the new anti-censorship.

These technologies prove chain of custody, not the legitimacy of the content. If someone creates a fake video clip putting words in someone's mouth, signs it with x509 certificate, and sends it to CNN, that doesn't help CNN determine the legitimacy of the clip.

the answer is most likely includes, among other things, a specific metadata standard for movie files, akin to EXIF, that breaks or tracks what happens after the point of video "creation". But this should have been done a long time ago.

There are already video and image forensics tech that should be able to detect. But it’s an arms race. And, there still the “low information” voter problem.

Actually the "low information voters" are voters who are intentionally propgandized for the purpose of winning elections. I see the only plausible near-term path as what poli sci theorists refer to as a 'balance of terror'. Suggestion by authors of self-policing media ecosystem acting as filtration is totally implausible.

Can you explain this plausible path, or give some pointers? I'm not having much luck with searching 'balance of terror' (although it was an excellent Star Trek episode)

Sad reality is that only "chain-of-custody" type of verification works.

The two technologies are closely related. But it won't help--there's plenty of older porn videos out there that aren't protected; the scammers can just use one of those.

I'm not arguing we can stop production of fakery (that ship has long failed) but we can switch to a new model of authentication filter. I've a bunch of ideas how it *could* work! It would be a technical stamp merged with distribution channels plus a new understanding/literacy.
