But they misapply the idea of censorship, and don’t dig at the changing nature of free speech.

Few in the political arena concern themselves with
@zeynep’a argument regarding the right to speak loudest.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -
i.e when we all have access to a platform, how is free speech changing when private companies can prevent you from speaking as loudly as possible by denying use of a platform?

We have a framework for drawing the line on a traditional sense of free speech, and acres of jurisprudence to back it up. The cases keep coming up in the ECHR.

The easiest and quickest way to deflate the alt right argument about the right to speak freely is to tell them if they’re rights are being denied they should fuck off to a court. Or ask them how they feel about defamation law.

Really fucking sick and tired of people conjuring p the idea that because some folk don’t want to soak themselves in the slurry that the alt right spew that they are somehow not engaging in a needful level of debate and corroding the idea of free speech.

You know what corrodes free speech? Folk not having ready access to legal funds to protect themselves against spurious defamation. Or the private sector having a lower threshold of proof for defamation.

Just does my fucking bin in, this constant bleating over safe spaces and the idea that large political groups policing their tone is censorship.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to keep you in a U.K. focused sweaty rant about tedious free speech ‘debates’

I actually like seeing how this is playing out elsewhere. Thank you! U.K. is an important but different context.
