The Silicon Valley model that privacy can be negotiated person by person rather as a whole with full externalities: networked, without practical obscurity, searchable, mass, permanent etc, is 100% wrong. (Fitness company opened up data and unearthed secret US bases. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )https://twitter.com/Paulmd199/status/957795392933961728 …

This is definitely absurd. Thanks Trump, Russia, and Republican Congress.

I don’t totally disagree, but if you’re on a “secret military base” don’t you have some responsibility to, for example, not carry around a device with a GPS broadcasting your position to a cloud service?

Think maybe official secrets (which by coincidence you might ACTUALLY READ & PHYSICALLY SIGN) takes precedent over a privacy policy? Hell, it's not like you don't know it shares data - it's the #1 feature!

Where would be a good place to start? What about requiring a layman's ToC and privacy policy, default opt-out privacy settings, and expanding the legal definition of "personally identifiable information?"

I agree with your points. But this particular case is not info extracted by aggregation or machine learning techniques. Individual data is harmful. Users need to be more aware. Companies must communicate risks. And for ML, be more specific and limiting on intended use.

My *privacy disclosure box* was a sequel to congressman Schumer, now Sen, box. The Schumer Box disclosed
#finTech credit card fees where prior was a system of long TOS (terms of service). My box discloses privacy.#102ndCongressionalTestimonypic.twitter.com/AszoAT2ZAs

They don't let you protect the most important data either. You pretty much have to decide you don't care or just not sign up for anything, ever.
