Ah! This is the part I'd wanted to write about the Ansari/#metoo moment, and @pennyred does! One big reason the conversation derailed badly is that the story was *framed* in a maximally derailing way—for attention and clicks. Hence why it's so hard to recover the conversation.pic.twitter.com/5HWQ5jwmWN

Here's the link to @Pennyred's original piece which is not about the role of attention economy, and she has that paragraph to contextualize her approach and it is an important point. https://longreads.com/2018/01/18/were-not-done-here/ …

On the one hand, this tension between getting attention and movement goals is not new—ask anyone from the 60s anti-war movement. But the online attention economy introduces new twists and turns. Bunch of stuff from my book. https://www.twitterandteargas.org/ pic.twitter.com/zUMK87c8PY

Problem described by Gamson and Wolfsfeld (1993) as it pertains to mass media: “Those who dress up in costume to be admitted to the media’s party will not be allowed to change before being photographed.” (Healthy) movement goals and click/attention economy are often in conflict.

How to have this discussion? As much as possible: Long-form. Meetings. Step back. Long-term work. Ad-financed distribution channels (social media) more for sharing links and aggregating attention, not for the discussion or fighting about it. The incentive structure is all wrong.

I'm all for social movements using social media for the things it is good for, but there are major pitfalls, and a strategic, successful movement in the 21st century has to learn to navigate them. I don't have ready-made answers; none of us do but this has to be a consideration.

Sometimes it *is* right to fight-it-out on social media. But not everything. Some moments require space to formulate a context, sensitivity and slower reactions. I don't always do this well myself, but that's what I learned as I participated/watched movements in the digital era.

Thank you - very important analysis. As an “X-ennial”, I’ve been freaked out by the manichean, all-or-nothing reactions and tribalism that happens in discussions on SM. Perspectives, contexts, intents, all get flattened or annihilated.
