I'm finding much of the recent discussion of free speech to be missing that key point, and not focusing on the true bottleneck, the crucial resource that Facebook and Google control: Attention. Our concepts and worries are outdated.

The point that these forms of control, corrosion, and disinformation are novel is a little overstated. America has always had complex mechanisms to fight ideas without (often) violating 1st amendment. Also, it's not like LTE haven't been written by campaign staffers forever.

I was thinking that myself when reading this thread. One of the best teachers I had was a history teacher. He taught me to look at the author and publisher of any piece and think about their motives. The source material for this lesson was coverage of the first world war.
