I'm finding much of the recent discussion of free speech to be missing that key point, and not focusing on the true bottleneck, the crucial resource that Facebook and Google control: Attention. Our concepts and worries are outdated.

Another major but terribly mundane piece of the puzzle that's mostly absent from much of the discussion about free speech etc. is that the big attention-brokers, especially the Facebook/Google duopoly, are ad-brokers. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Most everything else flows from that.

And that is my "pre-take" on all the Facebook changes—I wrote the essay last Fall. Consequences of last change are too complex to predict, and I don't think they know either. The crucial point is that they can just go *ta-da* and restructure attention for ~two billion people.

Thanks! Telling Facebook and Google to just “fix it” is unworkable. First, they’re holding The Ring—and it’s consuming them. They can’t just let go. Second, the trade-off are complex and deeply political. They alone cannot, should not, shape them.https://twitter.com/geomblog/status/953294348606570497 …

Might seem a tad ambitious (!) to take on Brandeis and Mills—but they wrote for and about their age, and we should too. We can continue to consider their normative goals, but let go of the prescriptive parts—which no longer operate the way they envisioned. https://twitter.com/shashj/status/953293535440142337 …

That was part of my motivation for writing it: not to disregard free speech, but to ask: what is it good for? And what does that mean in the 21st century? Focusing on it via old concepts thwarts the goals.https://twitter.com/gilgul/status/953268349282213888 …

Holding the issue in my hand... My first thought is how good
@WIRED is with design. While writing the piece, I was like “can we squeeze the font and pics and space and put more words in?” But this is so pretty. (I think so even on a 6a flight!
