Hard to say good or bad about such complex changes. What’s interesting is the unilateral power of Facebook on display, lack of simple answers or solutions, and lack of any direct discussion of the ad-financed business model—which, for once, comes up but pretty indirectly.

Most publishers cannot lose this much control of distribution in an ad-financed model and survive. Writing has long been on the wall.https://twitter.com/jbenton/status/951647857970483200 …

I have a piece coming out *soon* in
@WIRED about speech in the 21st century—basically arguing that what Facebook/Youtube controls is attention and prioritization, not speech. It is basically my pre-take on all these changes (wrote it last Fall!)Show this thread -
Attention and prioritization of information and interaction—probably most everything else in life as well—are the true bottlenecks and indicators of importance and values. The day is 24 hours for everyone, and that seemingly simple statement, to me, is one of the deepest truths!

And much of what we are discussing about what's going on in platforms comes down to just that: the power to prioritize interaction and to direct attention. That's why it is allso important; hard to think of too many things in life more important that that.

So, click bait will rise to the top?
Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

But it will also encourage Twitter-style flame wars, if indeed the interaction is measured and optimized for. I’m not even saying good or bad, I’m saying interaction bringing people together is both true and false. In-group and out-group go together.

I’d suspect they can judge the sentiment of interactions rather well these days, also with comments having Reactions attached to them, I suspect they will be optimizing for positive interactions, and not trying to facilitate family/friend fighting.

Please, @fbnewsroom , just give me all the posts from friends, groups, etc., in the exact order they happened in and let me make the decisions.

I understand why they don't do this, but it is an option I think most people would want. Most people have no idea the things they never see on Facebook from people they are friends with.
